Tone Ranger Boost Pedal

The quest for vintage tone continues here. During the sixties the Dallas Rangemaster helped mould the tone of many a famous guitarist. It is believed that Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Brian May, Tony Iommi and Richie Blackmoore all used the Rangemaster to great effect in their early careers, and many have tried to emulate these tones since. Firstly the Rangemaster is a treble booster giving up to 24dB of boost above 1-2kHz. But that's not all. As a result of the use of OC44 germanium transistors and careful biasing, there is a subtle distortion added which increases on loud notes. It's touch sensitive and frequency dependent and is at its best when driving a good valve amp (like ours) into overdrive.

We have taken the original circuit, found some very good 40 year old Mullard OC44s (which we carefully select for gain and leakage), made a few enhancements such as true bypass and a treble/mid boost switch, and packaged it into a beautifully made pedal which allows you to recreate that tone.

Don't pay American boutique prices - ours is just £89.95

Fuzztone Pedal

For almost four decades the FuzzFace has been the classic British fuzz sound. Used to good effect by Jimi Hendrix those tones are as sought after now as they were then. Why did it sound so good? Essentially what we have here is an overdrive rather than a fuzz - not a clipping diode in sight! The circuit, maybe accidentally, has some interesting features for such a simple circuit. The first obvious one is the use of two germanium transistors, then the circuitry exhibits progressive saturation and asymmetric clipping. Its touch sensitive. The louder you play, the greater the distortion, roll off the guitar volume a little - it cleans up. Perfect.

Once again, we have taken the original recipe, added a pinch of selected Mullard OC44s (much better than the horrible sounding AC128s fitted to many), a sprig of true bypass and assembled it with love and affection - a true culinary experience.

Like the Tone Ranger the price is just £89.95

Pico-Amp Miniature Amplifier

We all know how loud even low powered valve amplifiers are. A 5 watt valve amp is still just too loud to overdrive at home unless you want to seriously annoy the neighbours, wake the baby, or rattle the ornaments off the shelves. For those quieter, reflective moments spent composing your new single or serenading the wife, you definately need one of these.

It uses a tiny half watt IC amplifier chip, which has been around for quite a few years. We discovered that if you add an FET buffer in front of it and drive it hard, it distorts a bit like a valve amp. So plug in your Les Paul, jam your 4x12 into the speaker socket and play away. With the gain and volume at about halfway you've got country clean, dime it and Pete Townshend is there, in your living room. Great fun, and much sturdier than a pack of American Cigarettes (if you know what I mean).

All this sheer power for £49.95

Each of these are hand-built and will only ever be available in limited quantites, in a presentation box.

If you want to try these out come along to our stands at the Birmingham Guitar Show on 11th September and the Welsh National Guitar Show in Cardiff on 2nd October.
